Safeguarding a convent of medieval origin on the plain below Monsaraz, and renewing it as a living cultural centre.
The project
The Convento da Orada project is the comprehensive rehabilitation of a historic convent in Monsaraz, deeply rooted in the identity of the Alentejo and in Portugal's national history. Its aim is to restore and modernise the building while preserving its architectural authenticity, and to open it more fully to the public as a place for exhibitions, research and artistic creation.
Six centuries on the plain
The convent's origins go back to the fourteenth century, and it was rebuilt by the Augustinians around 1700, leaving the white façades and Manueline and Augustinian elements that still define it today. It is a monument to Portugal's religious, artistic and rural identity, set on the plain beneath the hilltop village of Monsaraz. A first restoration between 1988 and 1993 saved it from ruin; the Fundação Convento da Orada was later created to conserve it and bring it back into use, working with architecture schools, municipalities and international institutions.
Restoration and renewal
Three decades on, the building needs a new phase of care. Moisture, structural ageing and obsolete infrastructure are taking their toll, and access is limited. The intervention is guided by international conservation charters, using traditional materials, local craftsmanship and reversible techniques. It restores the roof and façades, adds proper waterproofing and insulation, brings in lifts, ramps and adapted facilities for full accessibility, and renews the lighting, acoustics, climate control and museum and exhibition spaces, with renewable energy built into the plan.
Why it matters
A convent of this age survives only if it is used. The rehabilitation secures the building's future and, at the same time, turns it into a year-round cultural venue that widens public access to art and heritage in the Alentejo interior. Close to the Spanish border, the Orada is also a natural meeting point for cross-border cultural collaboration, reinforcing the region as a destination for culture as much as for landscape. Preserving the past, in this case, is what makes room for what will be created there next.
