Geografia Criativa
An artistic programme positioning the UNESCO Naturtejo Geopark as a leading centre for contemporary creation.
The project
Geografia Criativa is a comprehensive artistic programme that sets out to position the UNESCO Naturtejo Global Geopark as a leading centre for contemporary creation. Rather than a single film or production, it is an ecosystem of cultural work spread across the territory of Beira Baixa — commissioning, producing and presenting art that is rooted in the place yet speaks well beyond it.
Three axes
The programme is organised around three lines of work. IDANHA1000 draws on the deep, layered heritage of the Idanha territory — among the oldest continuously inhabited landscapes in Portugal. The Cancioneiro de Idanha-a-Nova builds on the region's remarkable musical tradition, in a land internationally recognised for its song. And the Livro das Fortalezas turns to the border castles and fortified heritage of the interior. Across all three, the programme merges music, performance, video and heritage-based artistic production into a single, coherent body of work.
Culture across a territory, not a venue
Geografia Criativa is built to be decentralised and intermunicipal — culture made across an entire region rather than concentrated in one institution — with the explicit ambition of national and international reach. It treats the geopark itself as the stage and contemporary creation as the method, giving a low-density interior new cultural visibility and a reason for audiences to look toward it.
A programme-level initiative anchored in three axes — IDANHA1000, the Cancioneiro de Idanha-a-Nova, and the Livro das Fortalezas.
