The project

The Palacete Fundação Alentejo project is the safeguarding, rehabilitation and reuse of a 19th-century palace in the historic centre of Estremoz, and its reopening as a multidisciplinary cultural centre. It is a heritage project with a forward-looking purpose: not to freeze a building in time, but to bring it back into the cultural life of its town.

A house with a history

Built for Robert Reynolds, the palace is a notable example of neoclassical architecture — symmetrical façades, fine lioz-stone detailing and noble salons — in a town long associated with Portugal's stone and marble heritage. Like many buildings of its age and grandeur, it had reached a point where serious, careful intervention was needed to secure its future.

Rehabilitation and reuse

The project restores the palace's architectural authenticity while adapting it for contemporary cultural use, with attention to accessibility and environmental sustainability. Fundação Alentejo is transforming the building into a centre dedicated to music, the visual arts, science and educational programming — a place where heritage is not only preserved, but put to work for residents and visitors alike.

Why it matters

Heritage rehabilitation of this kind does two things at once: it rescues a landmark from decline, and it gives a town a living cultural institution. In Estremoz, the Palacete is intended to anchor a year-round programme that brings people into direct contact with culture, science and the arts — proof that conservation and contemporary cultural ambition can share the same walls.

Creators
